Here is a pretty damn interesting video of the Met Police Special Escort Group showing their tactics while escorting a VIP. Rather than have a planned rout that is closed off beforehand like the Secret Service do for POTUS, they make it up as they go along and don't stop even once, while maintaining the speed limit. Worth a watch.

They have contingency plans in place also. When visiting my city, a week before hand all drains and access points along the route are checked by bomb squad and sniffer dogs, they are then sealed with a tamper evident tab, marksmen are hidden on roofs along the route and plain clothes officers as well as uniformed officers are in and amongst the crowd (unless you know what to look for you would think there was only a few uniformed officers for crowd control).
Unlike when Clinton was in London a few years back and the motorcade was split causing panic when Tower Bridge opened (nobody had checked with Tower Bridge who need 24 notice to open the bridge for your vessel to come through). Doh.
